Our Fine Turner Fellows!

James Nelson and Emily Smith from FRA, our 2011 Turner Fellows

Every year since 2006, The Salvation Army has been blessed to have a student from Franklin Road Academy work at our facility as part of their Turner Fellowship program.  “Sponsored by the Cal Turner Family Foundation, the Turner Fellowship Program at Franklin Road Academy offers students an opportunity to serve in partnership with not-for-profits organizations within the Nashville community.  The fellowship program sponsors students committed to making a difference in the lives of others.”  And this has been the case each and every time a student has served here at The Salvation Army.

The students meet with our Volunteer Services Director and map out a schedule for the summer which will include time spent within the various programs we offer so that each student has the opportunity to experience first hand the inner workings of a non profit.  We have had students serve meals during our feeding programs to over 200 homeless men and women twice a week, work with our young children in our Kare for Kids child care facility, teach sports, arts/crafts and team building exercises to students age 6-13 in our community center, stock shelves and fill boxes in our Emergency Services Center and hand out hot dogs, cold drinks and fruit during our annual participation in the Shelby Park Fishing Rodeo.

Our 2007 Turner Fellow, Erin Colbert came back in 2008 after putting together a donation drive for our child care center. Erin and her classmates collected diapers, bottles, wipes and baby food.

What has been so incredible to see is the transformation from the first day they enter our building to the day they exit, bound for their senior year of school at FRA.  So often, they come in, shy, quiet, unsure of what lies ahead of them at this unfamiliar location but as they work side by side with our staff and the amazing folks we serve, a light is birthed within them.  As the days pass, they walk and work with passion for the mission, their minds reel with new ideas and ways of doing things, they are consumed with the desire to give back and put “Others” needs ahead of their own.    And when their time is done and the summer is over, they don’t stop.  They stay in contact with us and work within our other programs such as Angel Tree and have even orchestrated donation drives for our Kare for Kids Child Care Center.
