as they do now, I’ll fight….” that’s the opening line of the famous quote by William Booth, founder of The Salvation Army. Booth did not use the word “fight” lightly and implied that The Salvation Army as a whole, it’s officers, staff and volunteers would be there to the end to feed, clothe, pray and love on everyone and anyone at their time of need.
In the aftermath of the catastrophic earthquake and the tsunami that crashed upon the shores of Japan, last Friday, we have seen many women weep and cry out as news of loved ones reached their ears. As they sifted through the remains of their homes desperately searching for a familiar item in tact that would bring a sense of peace; a sense of the home they once had. We have seen father’s cling to cracked picture frames containing a water stained photograph of the daughter or son who went to work the morning of and never returned.
The Salvation Army is committed to serving the residents of Japan, fathers, mothers, grandparents, sons and daughters with every ounce of our being and we will work tirelessly; we will fight to assist in any way we can until everyone is found, everyone is clothed, fed, prayed for and loved. Currently three emergency service relief teams have been deployed and are currently serving in the hardest hit areas in Japan. One of the teams is assisting people who have been evacuated from areas where there is potential danger because of damage to nuclear power generation stations.
Per recent reports out of Japan, this disaster has affected a 1,242.75 miles north-south stretch of Japan. Official reports now state that more than 10,000 people are dead or missing.
You may wonder how can you play a role in assisting the people of Japan and our relief efforts there..
- Pray – this is the greatest donation you can make. Pray for those families affected by this catastrophic event. Pray for the search and rescue teams, military, relief workers, medical personnel and the countless volunteers
