Why Volunteer?

A Father/Daughter put together packages for families at our warehouse

That is a great question and I am super excited to share the answer with you…because it rocks!!!  That’s right, when you volunteer with The Salvation Army here in Nashville you have the incredible honor of working with people from all walks of life, from all backgrounds and circumstances.  You have the opportunity to get to really know those we are serving, to hear their stories, provide them with a hug, prayers and compassion.  It allows you to see life through the eyes of “Others” as you complete their Angel Tree applications when they come in to register, many for the first time.  Or when you man the Angel Tree booths in the mall and individuals drop by your table and pause for a moment to share why they adopt an angel every year.  You are doing for “Others” as you work in a chilly warehouse and go through each bag which represents a family, carefully matching the items in the bag with each family member to make sure each one is accounted for.  Then, if not, head toward our “Forgotten Angel Shop” where donated toys and clothes await.  As you scan the list of needs and wishes for each child or senior citizen, you may stop for a moment on some very simple items like a pair of soft pink pajamas requested by a 85 year old woman or a Princess Barbie for a little 7 year old who’s never owned a Barbie before.  As you sift through the many toy trucks, race cars and action figures, your eyes may well up at the thought of a young boys wish of just wanting a handful of Hot Wheels…”nothing elaborate or fancy, just some small cars he can scoot across the sidewalk”, shared his mother.

Volunteers checking each family's Angel Tree bags

This Christmas season, we have many ways you can give back and be a part of the change that is occurring on a daily basis here at The Salvation Army.  We’d love for you to join us in “Doing the Most Good” here in the Middle Tennessee community.

If you would like to volunteer your time, please contact our Director of Volunteer Services, Josh Lippincott at 615-416-3175 or email him at joshua_lippincott@uss.salvationarmy
