Another very busy day here in Middle Tennesse as our Salvation Army canteens poured out into area neighborhoods serving meals and offering prayer. Total to date, meals served, 17,063 (this includes drinks, snacks, meals) powered by staff, officers and 1556 volunteer hours.
Currently we have canteens serving in various areas throughout Middle Tennessee from all over the state and beyond. At this time, we have Madisonville, KY, Bowling Green, KY, Jackson, TN, Knoxville, TN, Winchester, TN and Hopkinsville, KY assisting us during this disaster. The Salvation Army – Murfreesboro is currently operating and meeting the needs within Rutherford County, while The Salvation Army Citadel Corps is busy working with the people within the Madison, TN area that ended up with extensive flood damage throughout it’s many neighborhoods.
Captains Patrick and Carey Richmond are the Corps Officers at the Citadel Corps and shared with me their insight on what they have encountered.
Captain Carey explained that “One woman came in so heart broken, because she thought her neighbor had been rescued and they found him dead last night. She felt so guilty that she didn’t do more. How could she do more? I wish we could have more people who are ready to handle the psychological aspect of this disaster. ”
Captain Carey continued stating that so many people are grateful for our canteens coming by their house to offer cold drinks and sandwiches. Captain Carey states, so many feel incredibly overwhelmed. Many families fled their homes with just the clothes on their back, some slippers on their feet and have nothing left. There is going to be a great need for a long time to come. But through this, Captain Carey believes God is in this and will get us through!
