…that’s about what it takes for The Salvation Army to do what it does effectively and efficiently here in Nashville and all over the world! The Salvation Army generally runs on a small staff so we rely heavily on the power of our volunteers. The folks who selflessly give of their time and gifts to the cause. The families, church, corporate and civic groups who gather together and decide to give back as a team and make a difference in someone’s life.
We have been blessed to have dedicated and incredible volunteers here in Nashville. The kind of volunteers who don’t think twice about getting up at 3am in the morning to jump on board a canteen and head out to a disaster site to feed victims and first responders of a tornado. Or the group of volunteers who go out to feed the homeless every week whether sleet, snow, sun, or rain; carefully preparing the meals and washing every plate and utensil used. Or the folks who gather at our warehouse and meticously go through each Angel Tree gift bag to make sure everyone who signed up within the family is accounted for and gifts are there for each one.
And speaking of Angel Tree, our season officially kicks off October 6th here in Nashville. For the month of October, we will register families from all over the county and surrounding counties for Angel Tree gifts to be distributed in December. We need volunteers to help us with the application process, simply filling in the needs and wished of qualified families. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m.- 3:30 p.m. and Thursday evenings from 5:30 p.m.-7:00 p.m. Then in November we will be on the lookout for volunteers who wish to man our Angel Tree Booths, which will be located at Cool Springs Galleria, Rivergate Mall, Hickory Hollow Mall and The Mall at Green Hills. Shifts are 7 days a week, Monday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.- 9:00 p.m. and on Sundays, 12:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. Then in December we are always on the lookout for volunteer groups to come out to the warehouse which is located at 811 Cowan Street in Nashville to help us sort through the gifts that have come in for the families and match them up according to the donors wishes and during the 3rd week of December the families will come back to the warehouse to pick up their gifts and volunteers can assist in handing those out to them.
All wonderful opportunities to give back to those in need and very heartwarming at the same time. Last year especially, it would break my heart to hear so many families stating it was the first time they had ever asked for help and weren’t even sure how to go about it. They would go on to say that for years their family would adopt “Angels” off of the tree in the malls and they can’t believe that this year, they will have to place their own children on this tree in hopes that someone will adopt them. Keeps it real, doesn’t it?
I encourage every one of you to consider working with us this holiday season….I promise you that it will change your life!
