The Writer

In December of 2013 my husband and I decided to make the long trek all the way from North Mississippi to Middle Tennessee to make a new home. I was blessed to come on board with The Salvation Army of Nashville a few short weeks later as Donor Relations Manager where I get to work with Development to maintain our donor base as well as assist with other fundraising and grant writing ventures.

Writing has long been a passion of mine. I majored in English and Creative Writing at Mississippi University for Women, a small and precious liberal arts school nestled in the heart of Columbus, Mississippi. During that time of my life, my worldview drastically changed (as worldviews are wont to do in college), and the phrase “social justice” began to reach the forefront of the cultural conversation and consciousness in which I placed myself.

The year after I graduated, I was hired by the Boys and Girls Club in my hometown as an AmeriCorps VISTA to run their volunteer program and to work with the staff on program development and grant writing. The goal of AmeriCorps VISTA is to build capacity within communities and local organizations to end poverty. Once I became exposed to the very real problems that our world faces through poverty each day, I knew my life’s work would be for a nonprofit. We all have our different callings and purposes, and we all have our own reasons for feeling like we belong in a certain sector or industry – this is mine.

I am excited to unite my passions for writing and social justice through this work with The Salvation Army. I hope you will continue with us on this journey as we use this blog to showcase the stories of the people we have the blessing of interacting with every day. Thank you for visiting our page, and may God bless you!
